Flights to Polonnaruwa by Cinnamon Air

Stroll around the ruins of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, where Sri Lanka’s history comes alive. The glories of the past are plentiful as the city bore witness to several civilizations, as well as the disciples of Brahmanism and the Sinhalese monarchies during the 12th  and 13th  centuries. Today, the city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best archaeological sites in Sri Lanka; a testament to the brilliance of its rulers and engineers.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa brims with a collection of well-preserved ruins, and ancient irrigation reservoirs. At the heart of the city lies the Dalada Maluwa (Terrace of the Tooth Relic), popularly known as the Quadrangle. The original home to the Tooth Relic, this makes up the most sacred area of the city and is a must visit for those who travel to Polonnaruwa.

Minneriya and Kaudulla National Park present ample opportunities to witness wild elephants, including the world famous “Gathering”, an annual migration of a large number of elephants to Minneriya National Park, near Polonnaruwa. Sightseeing in the city includes Parakrama Samudra, one of the largest ancient irrigation reservoirs, home to a plethora of birdlife. Other places to visit in Polonnaruwa include the Lankatilaka, Gal Vihara, Tivanka Image House, and Gal Pota.
