Explore one of the world’s oldest cities, Anuradhapura
Day 02
Explore one of the world’s oldest cities, Anuradhapura

After breakfast, leave for sightseeing around one of the world’s oldest cities, Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura went on to become a political and religious capital (4BC) that flourished for 1,300 years. In its prime, Anuradhapura ranked alongside Nineveh and Babylon in its colossal proportions—its four walls, each 16 miles (26 km) long, enclosing an area of 256 square miles (663 km²)—in the number of its inhabitants, and the splendour of its shrines and public buildings.

Walk amongst some fascinating ancient ruins and relive an era steeped in mystery, treachery and religious wonder such as the Sri Maha Bodhiya, perhaps the oldest living tree in the world. Around 245 BC, Sanghamitta Theri brought with her a branch of the Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Today, the tree is one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka.

The Ruvanwelisaya is a magnificent stupa built by King Dutugemunu after defeating the Tamil king Elara. The surrounding wall is decorated with 1,900 elephants, 475 on each side. Successive kings added to the palace over the years.

Thuparamaya. At the request of the Thera Mahinda, King Devanampiyatissa built the Thuparamaya to enshrine the collarbone of the Buddha and is considered as the first dagoba built in Sri Lanka. Shaped like a heap of paddy, the dagoba was destroyed several times. It was restored in 1862AD, during the reign of King Agbo II.

Lovamahapaya is situated between Ruvanveliseya and Sri Maha Bodiya and is known as the Brazen Palace or Lohaprasadaya. Built by King Dutugamunu, this Palace took six years to build.

And there’s much much more…
