Travel to Anuradhapura with Cinnamon Air

Sprawling monuments of archaeological wonder, coupled with crumbling temples and enormous dagobas make a visit to Anuradhapura a memorable one. At a time when many European cultures were still in their infancy, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s political and religious capital from the 3rd century for nearly 1,300 years, was flourishing with imposing architecture, rich arts and deep culture. Today, a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura is home to world famous ruins and remnants of a rich collection of architectural wonders built during the kingdom’s heyday.

Its impressive ruins are some of South Asia’s greatest sights – evocative of the rich history the city emanates, even today. Travel to Anuradhapura and discover soaring brick towers and ancient pools, which reveal the architectural beauty of the city. Its greatest structures are the numerous dagobas, which have been carefully and lovingly restored to their original splendour.

Be sure to explore the Jetawanarama, Thuparama and the Ruvanvelisaya Dagoba when travelling to Anuradhapura. Sightseeing in the city includes its three great tanks, which were built around 20BC and are considered amongst the world’s greatest engineering feats.

The Sri Maha Bodhiya, one of the oldest living trees in the world, the Archaeological Museum and Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds) are a few other places to visit in Anuradhapura.
