Minneriya National Park

Those who love to witness the grace and appeal of the mighty giants of the jungles-as they mingle and gather in their natural habitat-should certainly make a visit to the Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka. It is one of the most prominent attractions of the island, visited by locals and tourists alike in great numbers. The Minneriya Tank which was built by the iconic King Mahasena back in the 3rd Century AD is one of the precious national treasures of the island and is located adjacent to the Minneriya National Park.

Located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park nurtures an elephant population numbering 150-200. Many tourists visit the park during the dry season to witness the world-renowned Minneriya National Park Elephant Gathering which is one of the largest gatherings of wild elephants in the world.

Along with the mighty elephants, visitors to Minneriya National Park can also spot purple-faced langur, toque macaque, Sri Lankan sambar deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear. The Minneriya Reservoir is also a habitat for large water birds including painted stork, spot-billed pelican and lesser adjutant. Visitors will have the opportunity to spot endemic species of birds such as the Sri Lanka junglefowl, Sri Lanka hanging parrot, brown capped babbler and crimson-fronted barbet during a tour of Minneriya National Park. Along with these stunning creatures, one will also be able to witness the fluttering glory of many colourful butterflies as they swarm in their numbers, adding splendour beyond description to the national park.

Those who wish to travel to Minneriya National Park can now choose to fly with Cinnamon Air to Sigiriya and take a tour across the island’s spectacular rural charm in minutes compared to hours on the road.
