Wasgamuwa National Park

Sri Lanka is a land that presents a myriad of attractions and appeals to those who visit its stunning territories seeking beauty and charm. It is a land that is blessed with pristine beaches, rich heritage, unique culture and a flourishing wild life. Thus, a visit to Sri Lanka will seldom be a drab one.

Situated in Polonnaruwa Districts of Sri Lanka is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the island, the Wasgamuwa National Park. The park was declared with the noble intention of providing protection and shelter to the displaced animals during the Mahaweli Development Project, which took place in the year 1984.

The name Wasgamuwa is derived from the two words “walasa” and “gamuwa”. “Walasa” in Sinhala refers to bears and “Gamuwa” means woods. The national park also is a place that has historical significance as it is part of the ancient story of Yudanganapitiya. It is believed that the mighty king of valor, King Dutugemunu and his rival King Elara camped here during their fierce battle which occurred in the 2nd Century BC.

Many tourists visit the Wasgamuwa National Park with the intention of spotting its large herds of elephants while they roam about the wild. Even as they mingle and play, these mighty beings of the forests are certainly a spectacular sight to behold. It is believed that the park nurtures a herd of about 150 Sri Lankan elephants.

Not only is the Wasgamuwa National Park rich with its possessions of these graceful giants, it also is home to over 20 species of mammals. Among the commonly spotted creatures are the purple faced langur, toque macaque, water buffalo and Sri Lankan axis deer. If visitors are lucky they will also be able to catch a glimpse of the rare sloth bears, Sri Lankan leopards and golden palm civets. Along with these beautiful mammals, Wasgamuwa National Park also provides shelter to 143 bird species, making it an absolute paradise of rich beauty.
