Immigration Requirements
- Visitors to Sri Lanka are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the country, except for a few exceptions. The ETA can be applied for online at https://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/
- As of late 2024, Sri Lanka introduced free 30-day visas for tourists from 35 countries, but this policy was clarified to involve free issuance of tourist visas rather than visa-free entry. Currently, only citizens of seven countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand) qualify for free visas via the ETA system.
Medical Requirements
- Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if traveling from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission or if you spent more than 12 hours in transit in such countries. This applies to adults and children over nine months of age.
- Mainstream medicines are readily available in Sri Lanka, but travelers bringing large quantities of medication should carry a prescription to avoid complications with customs.
Controlled Substances
- Strict laws apply to drug possession and trafficking in Sri Lanka. Controlled substances require a valid prescription from a medical doctor. Travelers should avoid carrying potentially controlled substances unless necessary.
Traveling with Pets
- Authorization from the Sri Lanka Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) is required for traveling with pets. Procedures can be accessed at https://daph.gov.lk/
Entry Points
- Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake remains the primary entry point for air travelers. Other entry points include Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and major seaports like Galle Harbor and Trincomalee Harbor.
